What to expect:

Positive reinforcement, often abbreviated R+, is a training methodology has been around for a very long time. It relies on basic operant conditioning that is the core of all behavioral training for both land and marine mammals. It is exceptionally useful for training horses both on the ground and under saddle, across disciplines. R+ is becoming the leading training method for competitive sporthorses because it provides such a distinct competitive advantage.

R+ uses food as a primary reinforcer, and a clicker or other audible device to mark desired behaviors from our horses. From leading quietly in hand or brightening up the trot, to overcoming athletic challenges at highest level of our sport, R+ produces relaxed and physically competent horses.

R+ is not “trick training with treats”, as traditional trainers often believe. Rather, it is just one of the operant conditioning quadrants used for animal training. It uses cues, a bridge signal, and yes, food as a primary reinforcer. Eventually, the bridge signal and the food rewards are faded out and replaced with traditional riding aids. Simply offering treats to a horse after he has behaved in a way we believe is “good” is NOT positive reinforcement training. R+ is very precise. If not carried out with a full understanding of how it works, it’s easy to create problem behaviors or frustrated horses. The good news is that R+ is easy to learn for both horses and their handlers.
