The Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare:
- FREEDOM FROM HUNGER AND THIRST: Animals should have access to fresh water and a diet that keeps them healthy
- FREEDOM FROM PAIN, INJURY, OR DISEASE: Animals should be protected from pain, injury, and disease through prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment
- FREEDOM FROM DISCOMFORT: Animals should have an appropriate environment with shelter, a comfortable resting area, and soft bedding
- FREEDOM FROM FEAR AND DISTRESS: Animals should be treated in ways that avoid mental suffering
- FREEDOM TO EXPRESS NORMAL BEHAVIOR: Animals should have enough space, proper facilities, and the company of other animals of their own kind
