EP 50: Takeaways from a Clinic with Tik Maynard

Helena cantering Siouxsie

I’m not a beginner rider, I just feel like one.

-Helena

There are so many things that I cannot do in the saddle, and my jerkbrain tends to focus on the gaps in my riding repertoire instead of my actual skills, which aren’t all that bad.

Still, when I’m around talented riders, I feel like such a hack. And yet, here I am, bringing along a young Thoroughbred practically by myself. The only thing stopping me from being one of those talented riders I so admire, is me. Well, my jerkbrain.

Last weekend, I had the pleasure of hosting Tik Maynard for a clinic at a farm nearby. A friend of mine owns the stable where we held the clinic, so we hosted the event together. I put it together, got the clinician, promoted it, organized all of the entries and registrations, and my friend turned her stable into a magical, welcoming place. It was great!

Of course, Tik Maynard is a quality human being. You sorta need to be if you’re going to convince horses to be awesome… and he does that without even thinking about it. Do you want to know why Tik has such a powerful and effective influence on the horses he trains?

It’s because he thinks he does.  Listen in!

EP 24: Itchy Professionals

I think we’ve all experienced that dreaded moment when your farrier says, “I have bad news; I’m moving to the moon.” Ha! It doesn’t matter where she or he is moving, if they can’t take care of your horses feet anymore, they may as well be moving to the moon. Your heart sinks, you start to sweat, and then the real panic sets in. Where on earth am I going to find someone as good?!

Or maybe you run a boarding barn and your stall mucker showed up late one too many times for her own good. Where do you start? Craigslist? Indeed? Your local paper? Just the thought of all this logistical malarkey is enough to make any horse person break out in hives. And that’s what we’re talking about today – a new online service that connects horse owners with horse professionals.

Oh, and we’ve got something to say about hives, as well. If you’ve ever handled hay and walked away with itchy, screaming welts or hives, you don’t want to miss this episode, so listen in!
